President Dr Irfaan Ali has revealed that additional troops from the Guyana Defence Force have been deployed on the ground to comb through the shoreline with the hopes of recovering those persons still unaccounted for following the MV Barima tragedy.
Addressing bereaved families and relatives at Charity, Essequibo Coast this morning, the Head of State disclosed that like the offshore search and rescue operation, the on-the-ground efforts have been expanded.
“The search also includes two other ground troops from the Guyana Defence Force. Yesterday they had one such troop, the small boat. Today, it’s two additional troops on foot [that] would be combing the Shell Beach area and all the other areas along the coastline,” the Guyanese Leader assured.
President Ali added that the chopper will also be deployed again, along with other technology, to maximise continued efforts to recover the missing persons.
“As you know, we are racing against time, and they’re going to be trying everything [with] all the tools, assets are out there,” he stated.
Authorities on Tuesday night reported that 53 bodies have been recovered while the rescue count has been revised to 76, with some 50 persons still unaccounted for after Saturday night’s capsizing of the MV Barima off the Essequibo Coast.
