The Ministry of Health has officially launched Vaccination Week in the Americas in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/PAHO).
Delivering remarks at the launch, Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, noted that Guyana maintains vaccination coverage rates above 95 percent for most antigens, despite global declines following the COVID-19 pandemic.
He noted that vaccines remain one of the country’s strongest public health tools, preventing serious illnesses and saving lives.
The Minister also warned against the growing spread of misinformation, which continues to affect vaccine uptake, and stressed the importance of public education and trust in science-based guidance.
Guyana’s programme has been strengthened through long-standing partnerships with PAHO/WHO, as well as investments in cold chain infrastructure, solar-powered refrigeration in hinterland communities, and continuous training of healthcare workers to ensure vaccines safely reach even the most remote populations.
Special emphasis was placed on the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme, which targets boys and girls aged nine to 15 and is also available to women up to age 45.
The initiative aims to significantly reduce and ultimately eliminate cervical cancer in Guyana.
The Ministry is encouraging all parents and guardians to check vaccination records and visit their nearest health facility to ensure children are fully immunised.
The launching of Vaccination Week is a reaffirmation of Guyana’s commitment to protecting its population through immunisation.
