Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, is currently leading a delegation at COP 17 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
COP 17 is the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and is taking place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from 17th to 28th August 2026 under the theme “Restoring Land. Restoring Hope.”
The topics in focus at this year’s UNCCD COP17 is desertification, land degradation, and drought resilience.
Representing Guyana during the 25th August Ministerial Dialogue is Minister Vickram Bharrat, speaking on Drought Resilience. His message focused on Accelerating Drought Resilience for Healthy Land and Drought Resilience.
Minister Bharrat stated that “climate change alters rainfall patterns and intensifies climatic extremes, our task is not simply to respond when drought occurs. Our task is to build resilience before drought becomes a crisis.”
He further emphasied that “for Guyana, resilience begins with recognising that water, land, forests, biodiversity, agriculture and people are one interconnected system. Under the leadership of His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030 has placed this integrated approach at the centre of our national development pathway.”
Minister Bharrat will also be participating in a Ministerial Panel on 26th August during Land and People Day at the conference. The topic in focus for tomorrow’s panel is “From Summits to the Floodplains: Connecting Ecosystems and livelihoods.”
Also joining Minister Bharrat in Mongolia is Mr. Enrique Monize, Commissioner of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission.
