Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, today visited Leopold Street, Georgetown to conduct a back-to-school distribution exercise and along with a comprehensive community walkthrough to address immediate infrastructural concerns and announce major recreational upgrades.
Kicking off the outreach, the Minister distributed backpacks and umbrellas to local children, ensuring the community’s youth are supported and practically equipped for the upcoming school term. This initiative reinforced the government’s continued commitment to grassroots support and youth empowerment.
Following the distribution, Minister Manickchand conducted a walkthrough of the Leopold Street area, visiting homes to engage directly with families and listen to their daily challenges. During this assessment, she actively addressed residents’ issues, paying specific attention to critical drainage constraints and a pressing sewage problem impacting the neighborhood.
By identifying these bottlenecks on the ground, the Ministry is taking immediate steps toward improving general living conditions for residents.
Beyond resolving these immediate community challenges, the Minister utilised the engagement to announce significant infrastructural investments aimed at transforming the area’s recreational spaces. Responding to the need for safe and accessible community zones, she outlined plans for the development of a new playpark, a tennis court, a football field, and a basketball court.
Additionally, she confirmed that the Mildred Mansfield area is slated for targeted enhancements. These upgrades are designed to provide modernized, multi-purpose environments that foster sports development, youth engagement, and stronger community cohesion.
