General Secretary of the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has expressed satisfaction at the massive success of the party’s campaign launch on Sunday.
Speaking during the party’s press conference today, Jagdeo explained that he has been in politics for a “long time” and has attended many campaign launches.
But this year “was the biggest crowd we ever had and by far”, he said.
The event, Jagdeo noted, was filled with much enthusiasm among the attendees. He also expressed satisfaction at the diversity of the gathering, which was in the thousands.
“Ours was a truly national crowd that looked like Guyana,” Jagdeo said, adding that “this is the only diverse party in this country that caters to every group of Guyanese.”
According to Jagdeo, it was clear that the party’s supporters are proud that the PPP has kept the commitments it made to the electorate five years ago and were eager to hear about the party’s plans for the future.
The PPP GS also noted that it was “very pleasing” to witness the large number of young people who attended and participated in the campaign launch.
In this regard, Jagdeo expressed that the party has a great future ahead because young people have started to pick up the mantle of leadership.
“It is in their hands we have to entrust the future of the party and the country,” he noted.
This same energy was seen on Nomination Day, Jagdeo recalled.
He pointed out that unlike other political parties, the PPP did not have to pay or bully citizens to participate in either of the events.
Against this backdrop, the PPP GS said the diverse and overwhelming support displayed for the PPP at both events have “shocked” the party’s political rivals.
It “sent fear down their spines”, Jagdeo said.
The only other political party so far that has hosted a campaign launch event is the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) but that affair was criticised for being poorly attended and lacking the involvement of youths.
