Avinash Naidoo of Line Path Corentyne, Berbice was today slapped with seven charges in relation to the fatal hit-and-run accident in March, that claimed the lives of a 19-year-old and her nine-month-old baby.

Naidoo, who had been in hiding since the incident and was only arrested yesterday, appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Springlands Magistrate Court.

He is facing two charges for causing death by dangerous driving and three charges for failing to render assistance to an injured person and take them to a registered medical practitioner for medical treatment.

Additionally, the 32-year-old taxi driver is charged for failing to report an accident to a police officer within 24 hours. He has also been charged for failing to stop after an accident.

He was not required to plea to the two causing death by dangerous driving charges but pleaded not guilty to the other five charges.

Police Prosecutor Constable Whitney Yearwood told the court that Naidoo was driving motorcar HC 8905 at a fast rate on March 2 along the Line Path Public Road when he hit an electric bike being ridden by Tushan Surnjnarine with Kavita Betsan and her nine-month-old baby Eli Surnjnarine as pillion riders.

The prosecutor told the court that both the car and the electric bike were heading in the same direction.

After the accident, the driver did not stop. Police went to Naidoo’s home and were not able to find him.

Yearwood said on July 15, police were able to arrest Naidoo who was hiding in a chair at a house in Line Path. The prosecutor told the court that when he was contacted, he denied his identity but was nevertheless arrested.

Naidoo was remanded to prison and will have to return to court on July 31.
