The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Two – Pomeroon-Supenaam wishes to inform the public that at approximately 7:50 a.m. on Monday, November 3rd, 2025, a freak storm struck the Lima Housing Scheme, resulting in significant damage to six (6) homes and affecting approximately thirty (30) individuals, including adults and children.
Upon receiving the distress call from a resident, the Regional Chairman Devin Mohan immediately proceeded to the affected area and activated the Region’s emergency response protocols. The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) was promptly contacted to disconnect electricity in the area to prevent electrocution hazards, while the Regional Enhancement Team was mobilized to render on-site assistance.
The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) was notified and responded swiftly. Given the extent of the damage and the exposure of household property, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) was engaged to conduct regular patrols to ensure the safety and security of the affected families. Meanwhile, the Community Infrastructure Improvement Project (CIIP) team was deployed to assist with clearing debris and removing damaged household materials.
Several key regional officials, including the Regional Vice Chairman (RVC) Humace Oodit, Deputy Regional Executive Officer (DREO) Omesh Sasenaryan and technical officers, were also present to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate immediate relief efforts. The Superintendent of Works completed an initial structural assessment of the six affected homes.
At approximately 1:45 p.m., the CDC arrived and distributed emergency relief items, including janitorial hampers and tarpaulins, to provide temporary shelter and support. I personally met with the affected families to offer reassurance and to affirm the Regional Administration’s full commitment to assisting with their recovery.
Following the visit, an emergency coordination meeting was convened with the RVC, REO, DREO, AREO, Joint Services, and other stakeholders. The following key decisions were made:
Meal Support: The RDC will provide meals to all affected families beginning Monday, November 3rd, until further notice.
Temporary Shelter: Families were offered temporary accommodation but opted to stay with relatives.
Reconstruction: Rebuilding efforts will commence Tuesday, November 4th, at 8:00 a.m., under the supervision of the Regional Chairman, RVC, DREO, and Joint Services.
Workforce Mobilization: Ninety (90) CIIP workers and a core Public Works team will assist, alongside the Men on Mission (MoM) initiative, which has committed to rebuilding two homes that suffered the most extensive damage.
Resource Provision: The RDC will provide all necessary tools and materials, with the Sub-District of Public Works contributing wooden resources for construction.
Database Development: A database of affected residents is being developed to assess individual needs and ensure targeted support.
Medical Response: Two persons sustained minor injuries, both of whom received treatment and were discharged from the hospital.
GDF Support: Colonel Shepherd of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has pledged ten (10) skilled personnel to provide masonry and carpentry assistance.
The RDC continues to closely monitor the situation and is actively coordinating efforts to ensure that affected families receive the necessary aid to rebuild their lives. We will also engage corporate and public partners to strengthen ongoing recovery and rehabilitation efforts. The Guyana Police Force will maintain enhanced patrols in the community until full normalcy is restored.
As part of our long-term response, the Regional Administration has established a Disaster Risk Management Committee to oversee current emergency relief efforts and improve disaster preparedness and resilience across Region Two.
The Regional Chairman has extend heartfelt appreciation to all agencies, officers, and volunteers who have responded swiftly and selflessly to this unfortunate event. Together, we will rebuild and restore the comfort and safety of every affected family.
