Recognising that road safety demands the commitment of all stakeholders, Prime Minister Mark Phillips, on Friday reminded his colleagues in positions of power and influence that they too have a crucial role in keeping the nation’s roadways safe.

Speaking during the launch of Road Safety Month 2025, the Prime Minister, who is currently acting President, emphasised that officials must stop the practice of undermining traffic ranks who are executing their duties.

“When we in positions, do not get involved, and allow the police to do the work, that also contributes to safety in our streets,” the Prime Minister expressed.

PM Phillips divulged that whenever he receives calls from individuals who are stopped by traffic ranks for flouting the law, he does not intervene.

“I have people calling me [saying] ‘see what you could do’. I am not going to do nothing…,” the Prime Minister contended.

“In fact, I have young relatives of recent who called me and I said: ‘listen to the police, he has the discretionary powers to exercise in this case, don’t call me’,” the Prime Minister posited.

In fact, PM Phillips said he told his relative to hand the phone over to the police officer and, “I tell the police ‘this guy is not supposed to call me, don’t feel intimated, do what you have to do’.”

Against this backdrop, the Prime Minister made it clear to anyone listening to his message: “You know how I stand, don’t call me, because I gonna tell you the same thing, ‘let the police do the work’.”

In this regard, he urged officials in similar positions of power and influence to embrace a similar approach.

“When we who are in positions of influence…and we receive such calls, and we don’t get involved in passing any instructions to the police…that action allows the police to do its work and contributes to safety in our streets,” he explained.

Road Safety Month 2025 was launched under the theme “Careful Driving, Save Lives”.
