Deceased: Mortimer Sooknanan

The body of a labourer was on Sunday discovered at Lake Capoey, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).

The deceased has been identified as Mortimer Sooknanan, a 33-year-old who resided at Queenstown, Essequibo Coast.

It is suspected that Sooknanan drowned sometime between Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3.

Investigations revealed that the man had visited the lake on Saturday around 11:00hrs with his younger brother, Naitram Sooknanan, 30, and two friends known only as “Buddy” and “Royen.” The group was reportedly consuming alcohol during their outing.

The brother told investigators that around 13:30hrs, his brother, along with the two friends, had been swimming in the lake. He said he later observed his brother come out of the water and sit on a bench near the boat landing. However, at around 14:00hrs, the labourer was no longer visible. A search was immediately launched by the group, but they were unable to locate him.

The following morning, at approximately 8:00hrs, the brother and other relatives returned to Lake Capoey and resumed the search. Sooknanan’s body was subsequently discovered submerged in the water.

The body was pulled from the water and upon examination, what appeared to be fish bites were visible on the neck, back, and left ear.

The body was transported to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead; a postmortem examination is scheduled to be conducted.
