The Ministry of Labour, through its Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department, has launched an investigation into a fatal workplace incident involving 46-year-old labourer Mr. Nadir Baksh, that occurred, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at a construction site in Vive La Force, West Bank Demerara.
Mr. Baksh, who was employed by the Builders Hardware Construction, tragically lost his life while operating a front-end loader at the site.
It was reported that Mr. Baksh had attempted to maneuver the loader across one of the bridges currently being constructed in a new housing development.
During the maneuver, an unmarked sand truck reportedly approached the loader at close range, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle.
At the time of the incident, another labourer, 21-year-old Mr. Parmesh, was standing in the bucket of the loader. Upon observing the loss of control, he jumped into the canal and sustained minor injuries.
Following the incident, OSH Officer Ms Christa Simmons conducted a thorough on-site assessment to investigate the circumstances of the accident and develop recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
The Honourable Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton extends heartfelt sympathy to the grieving relatives, co-workers, and friends of the deceased.
He also takes this opportunity to remind employers and workers of the importance and need for good safety and health practices in the workplace so that similar incidents/accidents that can result in the loss of lives of loved ones can be avoided.
Investigations are still ongoing.
