Guyanese youth gunned down in French Guiana

A Guyanese national was allegedly gunned down in Cayenne, French Guiana, on Wednesday after gunmen opened fire in the area where he was reportedly renting an apartment.

The dead man has been identified as 23-year-old Andrew Nathaniel James, formerly of Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

While information about the shooting remains sketchy, this publication understands that he and another man were in a rented apartment when several gunmen opened fire. He was reported shot several times. The other occupant of the

James’ mother, Ecua Griffith, told a section of the media that she last spoke with her son on Wednesday morning, just hours before he was killed. She noted that he left Guyana a few years ago and was reportedly working in French Guiana. She described her son as a jovial and loving young man.

Meanwhile, the relatives and friends of the dead man held candlelight vigils in Guyana and Brooklyn, New York.

Griffith said funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date as the family continues to grieve and awaits further information from French authorities regarding her son’s death.
