GPHC Addresses Concerns Regarding the Passing of Newborn Bacchus
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) extends heartfelt condolences to Ms. Zoraida Bacchus and her family following the tragic passing of her newborn son on April 30, 2025. We recognize the immense grief this loss has caused and are committed to transparency, accountability, and ongoing communication.
In response to public concerns and recent media coverage, the hospital has launched a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the case. This includes evaluations by the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Paediatrics, Nursing, and Pathology, along with formal Quality Improvement investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate that Ms. Bacchus, a 26-year-old first-time mother with a medical history, was referred to GPHC from Diamond Hospital at 38 weeks and 1 day of gestation. Given her risk factors due to her medical history, labor was induced in accordance with standard medical protocols. She delivered a male infant at 11:00 PM on April 29, 2025. The delivery was complicated by shoulder dystocia, which was promptly and appropriately managed by the clinical team.
The newborn, weighing 4,385 grams, was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with respiratory distress. presumed neonatal sepsis, and perinatal depression.
Throughout April 30, the infant was reported to be clinically stable, with normal vital signs documented up until the final assessment at 8:00 PM. At approximately 10:50 PM, the baby was found cyanotic and pulseless. Immediate resuscitative measures were undertaken, but despite the team’s best efforts, the infant was pronounced dead at 11:23 PM.
A preliminary pathology report has identified an interventricular heart defect and respiratory distress as contributing factors. Additional diagnostic results, including pending blood cultures, are stillbleing processed.
GPHC deeply regrets this outcome and reaffirms its commitment to providing compassionate, evidence-based care to every patlent. We understand Ms. Bacchus’s desire for answers, and we are actively working with the family to share the outcomes of the ongoing investigations as they are finalized.
While every possible measure was taken to stabilize and support the infant–including NICU care, ventilatory support, and administration of antibiotics- some congenital conditions may not be apparent or preventable, even with appropriate care.
This case is being used to review and, where necessary, strengthen clinical protocols and systems to ensure continuous improvement in patient care.
We continue to extend our sincere support to Ms. Bacchus and her family during this difficult time. In the interest of the grieving family and the integrity of the investigation, we respectfully urge the public to refrain f rom speculation unt il ll findings are complete.
