General Secretary of the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) and Vice President of Guyana Dr Bharrat Jagdeo says government ministries and agencies could be reorganised to ensure better efficiency.

This, he told reporters during a press conference today, could take place during the party’s next term in office.

Jagdeo said this does not mean the creation of new ministries but it could result in that.

The Vice President said the intention is to ensure work is done more effectively and efficiently to better serve citizens.

This could entail not just physical reorganisation but workload shakeup as well as the addition of new tools to ensure the delivery of the work.

Meanwhile, with regards to the new cabinet, the PPP GS highlighted that it is the president’s responsibility to select the new ministers.

However, Jagdeo said ministers are usually selected based on performance and skills including people skills.

The PPP GS has reiterated that no candidate has been promised any positions in government.

Jagdeo noted that the PPP’s candidates’ lists include both people with experience and new faces, including 27 individuals under the age of 25. One of the candidates is as young as 18 years old while another is 19 years old.

He explained that there will be a focus on building capacity among the younger candidates.

Among some of the new names on the PPP’s list of candidates are former Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU) President, Dr Mark Lyte, well-known cardiologist and Head of Cardiology at the Georgetown Public Hospital, Dr Mahendra Carpen, and University of Guyana lecturer, Dr Kofi Dalrymple.

The lists also include former opposition members: former People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) members like James Bond, Geeta Chandan-Edmond, and Thandi McAllister, along with Lenox Shuman from the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP), and Dr Asha Kissoon from The New Movement (TNM).
