The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has successfully verified the accuracy of all of the speed cameras which have so far been installed under the new Automated Speed Ticketing System which will be introduced on Monday, April 7.
“These are located at Prospect and Houston [Heroes Highway]…and at Annandale, Lusignan and Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara (ECD),” the organisation has said in response to questions submitted by INews.
The GNBS under the 1981 Weights and Measures Act is responsible for the verification
of all measuring instruments used in trade, health and safety and law enforcement. This verification process is done twice annually.
The Bureau has over the years collaborated with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to verify the speed guns used by traffic ranks on the roadways.
Likewise, with the installation of the speed cameras, the GNBS is working with the GPF and the company doing the installation to verify the accuracy of those devices.
All of the cameras installed so far, which will be used under the e-ticketing system, have been verified.
Once the other cameras are installed, as the initiative expands, the GNBS will conduct the necessary verification exercises.
Meanwhile, with regards to the digital speed radar signs, the GNBS explained that they are “not to be used for law enforcement; therefore, it is not required that they be verified by the GNBS.”
Nevertheless, following requests from the GPF, one of the devices was checked, and according to the Bureau, it showed an accurate reading.
The government’s e-ticketing system is powered by advanced speed cameras and radar speed signs connected to cloud-based infrastructure; it will detect and ticket speeding violations, ensuring seamless and fair enforcement of traffic laws.
This initiative is part of the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS) Project, a collaborative effort between the Guyana Police Force and the National Data Management Authority (NDMA).
