The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will be partnering to undertake initiatives geared towards the elimination of workplace harassment.
This collaboration emanated from a recent meeting with President of the GCCI, Kathy Smith and Junior Vice President, Kristia Ramlagan-Prescott, and Regional Director of UNFPA for Latin America and the Caribbean, Harold Robinson at the GCCI Secretariat.
The discussion saw the two parties examining areas for collaboration that align with UNFPA’s objectives in the areas of eliminating maternal mortality, encouraging family planning, and the elimination of workplace harassment.
“We want to work with you in the area of prevention of sexual harassment in the workplace…We have developed a standard and methodology to apply in the different sectors,” Robinson stated. He said the goal is to make workplaces safe for women so that they can live productive lives that are free from harassment, adding, “You are the perfect partner for us in terms of the size of your membership.”
During this meeting, the GCCI President also provided Robinson with an overview of the organisation’s membership, its role, its committees, and the focal areas. She also provided insights into the Chamber’s efforts towards women empowerment, including the establishment of a Learning Centre that is geared towards capacity building.
“We recently set up the Micro and Women Entrepreneur Learning Centre through a collaboration with World University Service of Canada. Our Agriculture Committee has also been conducting training across the regions with farmers to teach them about branding, standards, and so on,” she stated, noting that a programme has been developed with a target of training 150 women by December.
The GCCI committed to collaborating on several projects that are being executed in alignment with the UNFPA’s objectives related to workplace safety, and looks forward to a fruitful partnership.
