Online booking system coming for Guyana-Suriname ferry service

The Boards of Canawaima Ferry Service of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the Republic of Suriname convened a Joint Bilateral Meeting on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, in Nickerie, Suriname, to discuss strategic initiatives aimed at further strengthening and modernising the ferry service.

Among the key outcomes of the meeting was a shared commitment to the implementation of an integrated online booking system. The system is expected to improve customer convenience by reducing waiting times, enabling advance reservations for passengers and vehicles, providing 24-hour ticket purchasing, issuing automated booking confirmations, and enhancing operational planning through real-time capacity management. Both Boards expressed their commitment to ensuring a reliable and continuous daily ferry schedule.

Both Boards agreed to work collaboratively towards the successful implementation of the system. The Boards also discussed the planned drydocking of the MV Canawaima and the overhaul of its main engines to support the continued safe and reliable operation of the ferry service. In support of these efforts, proposals for technical cooperation will be considered through the appropriate processes.

During the maintenance period, arrangements will be made to ensure the continuity of ferry operations through a replacement vessel. The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the Republic of Suriname to the continuous development of the Canawaima Ferry Service. Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, enhancing operational performance, reinforcing institutional resilience, and improving the service.

As the principal maritime link between the two neighbouring countries, the Canawaima Ferry Service continues to play a vital role in facilitating the movement of passengers, vehicles, and cargo while supporting trade, tourism, and regional integration.

Both Boards reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation in delivering a safe, reliable, and efficient ferry service for the mutual benefit of the people of Guyana and Suriname.
