Two officers and twenty-eight other ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) have successfully completed an intensive Jungle Life Training programme conducted by the Brazilian Army’s 1st Jungle Infantry Brigade in Boa Vista, Brazil, further strengthening the longstanding military partnership between Guyana and the Federative Republic of Brazil.
The five-day training formed part of the XXIX Regional Military Exchange Meeting (RRIM), an initiative aimed at enhancing operational cooperation and strengthening the capabilities of both armed forces through the exchange of knowledge and professional expertise. Under the arrangement, Brazil hosted the first phase of the programme during the first semester of 2026, while the Guyana Defence Force is expected to host the reciprocal training later this year.
Throughout the programme, the GDF contingent, comprising ranks of the Infantry Battalions and the Special Forces Battalion, received instruction in a range of jungle warfare disciplines essential to operating in one of the world’s most demanding environments. Training included combat shooting, navigation, immediate action drills, communications in jungle operations, explosives, tactical emergency medical care, military planning and briefing procedures, together with demonstrations of operational equipment and techniques employed by the Brazilian Army.
The training was designed to enhance individual and collective proficiency while promoting interoperability between the two defence forces. It also provided participants with valuable exposure to operational procedures, doctrine and best practices employed by one of the world’s foremost jungle warfare forces.
The exchange further underscores the enduring defence relationship between Guyana and Brazil, which spans several decades and has included continuous collaboration in jungle warfare training, professional military education and operational exchanges. Brazilian military instructors have, over the years, supported the Guyana Defence Force through instructional duties at the Colonel Robert Mitchell Jungle and Amphibious Training School at Makouria, contributing significantly to the development of the Force’s jungle warfare capability.
As neighbouring nations sharing the Amazon region, Guyana and Brazil continue to recognise the importance of close military cooperation in strengthening regional security, enhancing preparedness for operations in the jungle environment, protecting the Amazon ecosystem and supporting efforts to combat transnational crimes along their shared frontier.
The successful completion of this exchange reflects the Guyana Defence Force’s continued commitment to developing a highly trained and professional force while deepening strategic partnerships with regional allies through meaningful military cooperation.
