A fuel tanker truck bearing registration number, GAJ 9707, owned by a 36-year-old businessman from Culvert City, Lethem, reportedly caught fire along the Mabura road, en route to Lethem, at about 5:15h on Saturday, the police reported.
At the time, the tanker was being driven by Vijay Persaud, a 38-year-old Driver, who was in the company of his 20-year-old porter Joseph Layne. They were travelling along the Mabura road from Georgetown en route to Lethem, transporting fuel — that is to say 19,500 Litres Gasoline and 19,500 liters Diesel.
The driver related that on the date and time mentioned, he heard a loud explosion as if one of the truck tires had exploded.
He said he immediately brought the truck to a stop and made checks where he observed the left rear tire on fire. He further related that he used a fire extinguisher he had in the truck to put the fire out but this proved futile.
The fire continued to blaze which caused himself and porter to run to safety. Subsequently, the entire truck became engulfed in flames. No one received any injuries.
The fire station was summoned and on 2025-08-23 at about 11:15hrs, water bowser #19 arrived on the scene, headed by sub officer Fenton Drepaul-Saul with the assistance of four crew members. The firemen went into immediate action, put out the fire and departed at 12:30hrs.
The damaged truck was cordon off and there is a free flow of traffic. The driver and porter are assisting Police with the investigation.
