The Ministry of Natural Resources, through the Guyana Forestry Commission, has partnered with the European Union to strengthen efforts to reduce deforestation and forest degradation in the Amazon rainforest. This collaboration focuses on building capacity in integrated fire management, protecting natural heritage, and improving the quality of life for local communities.
The initiative forms part of the Amazonia+ Program, funded by the European Union and led by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, in partnership with the Pau Costa Foundation. Its goal is to promote responsible fire use as a tool for sustainable land management while preventing destructive wildfires.
As part of this effort, a series of training courses known as community brigades (BRICOM) was held from April 14 to 16, 2026 in Linden, Region 10.
These sessions brought together local communities and institutions, including the Civil Defence Commission, Guyana Fire Service, Protected Areas Commission and Environmental Protected Agency to deepen their understanding of fire behavior, strengthen community brigades, and encourage practices that balance environmental protection with community development.
