Fire Service raises alarm over obstructions blocking Regent Street hydrants

Earlier today, August 11, 2026, ranks from the Guyana Fire Service’s Fire Hydrant Department conducted routine testing and inspections of fire hydrants along Regent Street, Georgetown.

As one of Georgetown’s busiest commercial zones, Regent Street experiences significant daily activity. Regular inspections are therefore essential to ensure that fire hydrants remain functional, accessible and ready for immediate use during an emergency.

During today’s exercise, ranks observed an alarming number of obstructions and encumbrances around several fire hydrants, which could hinder firefighters from gaining quick access to these critical water sources during a fire.

The Guyana Fire Service is once again appealing to members of the public, motorists, vendors and businesses to desist from:

• Parking vehicles in front of or around fire hydrants
• Dumping garbage near hydrants
• Vending in areas that obstruct access to hydrants
• Placing construction materials or other objects around hydrants
• Creating any other obstruction that prevents firefighters from gaining immediate access

Every second counts during a fire emergency. A blocked hydrant can delay firefighting operations and place lives and property at greater risk.
