An early morning fire destroyed a workshop attached to Demerara Shipping Limited on Water Street, Georgetown

An early morning fire today (Sunday, May 31, 2026) has completely gutted a workshop owned by Demerara Shipping Company Limited (DSCL) along Water Street, Georgetown, and the top floor of a four-storey wooden and concrete commercial building on Lombard Street, Georgetown.

Based on reports received, the fire reportedly started around 03:00h, and within minutes, the workshop, which is also being used as a spare parts bond, was completely engulfed. However, due to the intensity of the blaze, the top floor of an adjacent building, which housed a tailor shop and several other businesses on Lombard Street, caught fire.

Additionally, there were damages to a neighbouring workshop and a Distribution Services Limited (DSL) outlet that are located on either side of the DSCL workshop.

The fire tenders and firefighters from the central fire station were deployed to the area and sprang into action. Their swift response contained the blaze from causing further damage to nearby properties.

This publication was told that the fire might have started from a low-bed hauler that was parked in the workshop for repairs. The hauler was completely destroyed in the blaze along with a canter, two forklifts, and a quantity of spare parts that were stored in the facility.

Both DSCL and DSL are subsidiaries of the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) Group.
