Investigators are probing the cause of a fire of so far unknown origin which occurred on the western side of Guysuco’s sugar terminal at Ramp Road Ruimveldt, Georgetown, which destroyed a number of rice sacks, approximately one ton in weight (property of Guysuco), which occurred at 23:22hrs last night (08th March 2025).

Home Affairs Minister Hon. Robeson Benn, along with Inspector Blair, Inspector King, Corporal Mounter and other police ranks visited the fire scene at approximately 00:47hrs this morning.

Enquires disclosed that a quantity of rice sacks (approximately one ton) was in a stockpile at the northern section of Guysuco’s wharf when fire was seen emanating from the area by crewmen of MV Roibeira which was docked at the wharf.

An alarm was raised, and the Guyana Fire Service was informed. Water Tenders 98 and 118 and Water Bowser 21, headed by Station Officer Manramโ€”all from the Central Fire Stationโ€”responded but did not go into action because the fire was extinguished by crewmen from the MV Roibeira vessel using a water hose before their arrival.

Several persons were questioned as investigations continue.
