The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Stride 592, on Saturday hosted a wellness walk in observance of Caribbean Wellness Day 2026, aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and raising awareness about the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Held under the theme, “Our Mind, Our Body, Our Wellness,” the activity commenced at the Guyana Friendship Park Main Square in Region Three and attracted scores of participants. Participants walked from the western side of the park to the eastern side before returning to the starting point.

The activity saw participation from representatives of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ministry of Natural Resources, the Guyana Defence Force and other organisations demonstrating a collective commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles and strengthening awareness of wellness and disease prevention.

As part of the day’s activities, nutrition booths were established on-site, providing participants with useful information on healthy eating and nutrition. Healthy snacks and beverages were also available, reinforcing the importance of making healthier food choices as part of an overall approach to wellness.

Addressing participants, Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, said the observance of Caribbean Wellness Day provides an important opportunity to increase awareness about chronic non-communicable diseases and the steps individuals can take to prevent or delay their onset.

Minister Anthony emphasised that adopting healthier lifestyles, including engaging in regular physical activity and making healthier food choices, can significantly contribute to reducing the risk of developing NCDs.

He also highlighted the growing interest in physical activity across Guyana, noting that more persons are incorporating exercise into their daily routines through activities such as walking in community parks and participating in recreational walks across the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.

The Minister encouraged Guyanese to make physical activity a consistent part of their daily lives, stressing that wellness should extend beyond commemorative activities and become a long-term personal commitment.

The Ministry of Health continues to prioritise health promotion and disease prevention as part of its efforts to reduce the burden of NCDs in Guyana. Through initiatives such as Caribbean Wellness Day, the Ministry remains committed to empowering citizens with the knowledge and opportunities needed to make healthier choices and improve their overall quality of life.

Caribbean Wellness Day is observed annually across the Caribbean to promote healthy living and encourage individuals, families and communities to take proactive steps towards improving their physical and mental well-being.
