Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, has ordered the immediate removal of several heavy-duty trucks parked along the Lamaha Embankment in Georgetown, which has been transformed by the government into a green and safe space for families in the area.
During an inspection earlier today (Saturday, April 26, 2025), Minister Edghill said persons are using the recreational space as an apparent mechanic shop.
“On this embankment, we have people who have now opened mechanic shops, parking heavy-duty trucks and servicing those trucks on the railway and embankment. We have made efforts to find the owners.”
“The owners of these trucks must remove them immediately and cease all mechanical works or repairs of vehicles on this embankment… If they don’t, we will move them and confiscate them,” the minister cautioned.
At the time of the visit this afternoon, there were at least two flatbed trucks parked along the Lamaha Street embankment. The company label on one of them was Paramount Group Guyana Inc. Another was Paragon Energy.

Declaring that there is a zero tolerance for such acts, the Public Works Minister issued a stern warning to others to desist from misusing any of the recreation spaces across the country.
“Any other businessman [or] small operator who plans to do the same – whether on Heroes Highway, whether on the new Lamaha Street [safe space] we’ve created – the same applies to you. We will not tolerate people using these spaces that have been created for the benefit of families and children, for people to convert it into use like this,” Edghill stressed.
Works on transforming the Lamaha street embankment, which was previously part of the East Coast Railway, commenced in 2021 under President Dr Irfaan Ali’s vision to create child-friendly safe spaces in communities across the country for families to enjoy.
It was explained that this initiative was aimed at transforming the city’s infrastructure and beautification efforts, making it more attractive to locals and tourists.
