Recognising that allegations of corruption exist not just in the security sector but in any environment where there is human bias, newly appointed Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond says the government’s digital transformation agenda will aid in stamping out corruption across various agencies.

During an interview with the media on Wednesday, Minister Walrond – who formerly served as Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce in the last Cabinet – was asked about the issue of corruption in organisations that fall under her purview such as the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

In response, she highlighted that allegations of corruption are present wherever there are humans involved.

“…not just the Police Force,” Minister Walrond, a former magistrate, noted.

Nevertheless, she explained that the government’s investments in digitsing key services is a step in the right direction in tackling corruption because it removes the human element involved in processes.

Using as an example the application process for firearm licences, the Home Affairs Minister indicated that she will soon engage the relevant stakeholders on making that system digital.

“It should be based on certain criteria…I’ve spoken to the secretary of the Firearm Board, I’m yet to speak with the chairman” on developing a system that removes human element in the process, the minister said.

In its manifesto, the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) recommitted to tackling corruption across government agencies.

The party said in its ongoing efforts to combat corruption, it will strengthen laws where needed; establish an anti-corruption unit; use technology such as blockchain to aid transparency, reduce bureaucracy, and improve efficiency; and fully enforce the Access to Information Act.

In his inauguration address to the nation, President Dr Irfaan Ali also reaffirmed his commitment to stamping out corruption, noting that “corruption undermines the efficiency, fairness, and credibility of public service”.
