President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has directed Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh to convene a meeting with the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Charles Ramson Jr, the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues and the Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), Godfrey Statia and local boat racers to explore duty-free concessions for imported racing boats.
The head of state made the commitment while responding to racers at the Lake Mainstay Regatta held recently, who appealed for relief on import duties to help develop the sport among young competitors.
In a video posted to his social media page, President Ali said government will work with stakeholders to establish a special import category for racing boats, similar to the framework used for racing cars.
“I promise you all that, more than likely, this is going to be a policy, because we are promoting tourism, we are promoting sports,” he told them.
He said any concession would apply strictly to vessels used for competitive racing, noting that eligibility criteria will need to prevent the category from being used for recreational imports. [DPI]
