Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred at about 21:25 hrs last night (Wednesday 4th June 2025) on the Riverstown public road, Essequibo Coast, which claimed the life of 28-year-old Kevin Bacchus.

The accident involved motor lorry #GNN 4987, owned and driven by Kevin Bacchus, the now-deceased 28-year-old from Queenstown, Essequibo Coast; motor lorry #GAJ 2185, owned and driven by Jairam Sukhu, a 43-year-old from Maria’s Lodge, Essequibo Coast; and motor lorry (Trade Plate #BMI-2), driven by Yogeshwar Persaud, a 28-year-old from Columbia, Essequibo Coast.

Enquiries disclosed that lorry #GAJ 2185 was proceeding North on the Western drive lane of the road and was at the time transporting an excavator, followed by a motor lorry (Trade plate # BMI-2) which was proceeding at the back. Bacchus’ vehicle (#GNN 4987) was proceeding in the opposite direction at a fast rate, allegedly in a ‘zig-zag’ manner.

On seeing this, the driver of motor lorry #GAJ 2185 claimed that he pulled to the left side of the road, at which point Bacchus’ vehicle (#GNN 4987) slammed into the right side of the excavator track, which was on the low-bed trailer attached to lorry #GAJ 2185.

Bacchus reportedly lost control of his vehicle and further collided with the right-side rear portion of the lorry (# BMI-2), which was proceeding behind the trailer.

Bacchus sustained injuries on his body and was conveyed to the Suddie Public Hospital by public-spirited persons, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 21:36 hrs by Doctor Omar Moffett.

The body was escorted to the Suddie Public Hospital’s Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Both drivers were arrested and placed in custody at the Suddie Police Station, assisting with the investigation.
