Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Madanlall Ramraj, on Friday visited the US$12 million China-Guyana Joe Vieira Friendship Park located on the West Bank of Demerara, to inspect ongoing works on the landmark project.

The project, which is being funded through a grant from the Government of China, is currently 83 per cent complete and remains on schedule for official completion.

It is expected to be open to the public by the first quarter of 2026. This is part of government’s commitment to promote healthy lifestyles, sports and relaxation for both the young and elderly as a country with an infrastructure trajectory pathway for the benefit of all Guyanese.

This transformative development forms part of the Government’s broader efforts to improve national infrastructure and expand recreational spaces for citizens across the country.

“The investments by government in national infrastructure are not just to build roads. National infrastructure is about connecting people, and that’s what parks do. The conceptualization of the park was to ensure that people have spaces to spend time with their families. Our citizens need spaces to have family time, our children need safe spaces to explore recreational activities, and we as a government are excited to see this project come to fruition,” Minister Ramraj stated.

Designed to blend modern infrastructure with the beauty of nature, the China-Guyana, Joe Vieira Friendship Park will feature a range of recreational and sporting amenities including football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, and lawn tennis facilities.

A dedicated children’s play area is already taking shape, while lush green lawns and local species of trees will be spread across the park to preserve its natural charm and create a serene, welcoming atmosphere.

The site will include three main entrances, and a new exit road will be constructed at Schoonard to improve accessibility and traffic flow. Additionally, road upgrades surrounding the park are planned to complement the new infrastructure and enhance connectivity for residents and visitors.

“This park will bring tremendous benefits to residents across Region Three,” Minister Ramraj added. “It will not only serve as a space for recreation and leisure, but also encourage healthier lifestyles, promote youth engagement through sports, and provide a safe, green environment for all families to enjoy.”

Minister Ramraj expressed satisfaction with the progress and reaffirmed government’s commitment to delivering quality, people-centered infrastructure that enhances the lives of Guyanese and strengthens ties of friendship and development.

Once completed, the park is expected to become a major attraction in Region Three, offering families, youth, and sports enthusiasts a modern, eco-friendly space for recreation and community engagement.

Minister Ramraj was accompanied by the management team from the Protected Areas Commission, Technical Officers from the Ministry of Public Works and contractors for the project.

Minister Ramraj further emphasized that the Government remains steadfast in its commitment to infrastructural development, not only as a means of improving physical connectivity, but as a driver of social inclusion, economic growth, and national unity.
