Canje Secondary teacher charged with cannabis trafficking

A teacher attached to the Canje Secondary School has been charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking after police allegedly found him with 37 grams of cannabis.

Thirty-year-old Marlon Gomes, of Strand Road, New Amsterdam, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Court on August 14, where the charge was read to him.

Gomes pleaded not guilty and was granted $50,000 bail.

According to Police, Gomes was arrested on August 5, following the discovery of 37 grams of suspected cannabis at Strand Road, New Amsterdam.

He was subsequently charged with possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking.

The charge was laid under Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10.

The matter has been adjourned until August 28 for report.
