Police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of 45-year-old Jomo Peters of Haslington New Scheme, East Coast Demerara, on Thursday along the Rupert Craig Highway, near Pump Road.

The collision involved motorcar PYY 4296, driven by a 21-year-old woman; motorcar PAE 9879, driven by a 28-year-old woman; and motorcycle CR 2701, which was being ridden by Peters.

According to reports, Peters was speeding east along the highway, allegedly without wearing a safety helmet, while overtaking a line of traffic during the “third lane” period. In the process, the left handlebar of his motorcycle clipped the front side and rear-view mirror of a westbound car (PYY 4296), causing the bike to spin out of control.

Moments later, the out-of-control motorcycle slammed into the front side of another westbound vehicle (PAE 9879). The impact sent Peters through the air and onto the concrete median, where he landed, suffering severe head and body injuries.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was later taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.

Breathalyzer tests conducted on both drivers revealed no trace of alcohol. They remain in custody assisting police with ongoing investigations.
