A man’s home has been destroyed by fire, days after he testified in an assault case involving his neighbour.

The Liverpool Village, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) home of 60-year-old Gavin Cummings, a farmer, was on Saturday destroyed by fire.

Days before the blaze, Cummings had testified in court against a neighbour, who was charged by the police for the assault of an individual.

On Thursday, the woman was found guilty, and had to return to court on Monday for sentencing.

Cummings said on Friday afternoon, the woman threatened him and as such, he filed a police report against her. On Saturday, his house was destroyed by fire.

The farmer, who also vends at the Port Mourant market on Saturdays, said he left home at about 1:30hrs that day to head to the market. Whilst there, he received information that his house was on fire. When he returned, it was about 4:30hrs, and the house was completely destroyed.

Cummings says the blaze also destroyed two bicycles and a motorbike belonging to him.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Magistrate Michelle Matthias imposed a one-year jail sentence on Debra Leitch. This publication understands that the woman is also being investigated for arson.
