The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has welcomed a new intake of soldiers following the completion of Basic Recruit Course (BRC). The graduation parade was held on August 13 at the Colonel John Clarke Military School (CJCMS), Tacama, where the recruits formally concluded their initial military training.

The course commenced on April 27 and was designed to equip recruits with foundational military knowledge, discipline and skills required for service in the GDF. Training covered areas including drill, military knowledge, marksmanship and physical fitness. In his feature address, Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, stressed the need for soldiers to be prepared to operate in an evolving defence environment. He highlighted the Sound, Image and Movement (SIM) and Awareness, Adaptability and Agility (AAA) concepts as important considerations for operating in a modern military environment.

Brigadier Khan also underscored the importance of discipline, professional conduct and continuous learning as soldiers prepare for the demands of military service.

According to the GDF, the training is an investment in the Force’s future capability as Guyana’s defence and security requirements continue to evolve.

Outstanding performances during the course were recognised through several awards. Private Jamin Williams was named Best Graduating Student and also received the award for Best Military Knowledge. Private Carson Goodchild was named Runner-up Graduating Student. Private Jeremiah Paul received awards for Best Drill and Best Shot, while Private Royston Layne was awarded Best Fitness.

The newly trained soldiers will now be assigned to units across the GDF, where they will continue their professional development and apply the skills acquired during their initial training. The GDF said the new intake will contribute to its capacity to maintain a capable and adaptable force in response to Guyana’s defence and security requirements.
