The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has completed the recount of all 395 ballot boxes in sub-district four (East Coast Demerara) of Region Four as well as the 77 ballot boxes in Region Five.
The tabulation process commenced for Region Four and this will be followed by the tabulation for Region Five.
The recount exercise, which was requested by APNU, commenced yesterday morning at GECOM’s Georgetown office.
The recount has
produced no significant changes to the results of Monday’s General and Regional Elections, which show that President Dr Irfaan Ali has been re-elected to serve a second term.
Ali’s party – the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) – secured a landslide victory with 242,498 votes, based on the results declared by the returning officers for each of the voting districts.
This represents an impressive lead of over 100,000 votes over the party’s nearest political rival.
Meanwhile, once the entire recount process is completed, the next step is for the Chief Elections Officer (CEO) to present the final results to the Commission, as mandated by Section 96 of the Representation of the People Act.
The CEO’s role is to compile and present the results based on the declarations made by the respective Returning Officers, and to incorporate the findings of any legitimate recounts.
