Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Vanessa Benn, today visited the Yarrowkabra Homestead Project along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway to assess the progress of works and receive updates on the development.

Accompanying the Minister were Deputy Director of Community Development, Donel Bess-Bascom, Mr. Ravin Singh, Senior Engineer Orlando Arno, members of the Special Projects Unit, and other technical officers. The team inspected the first completed shade house and reviewed the progress of the wider project.

The Yarrowkabra Homestead Project is a pioneering Government initiative that combines affordable homeownership with sustainable agriculture.

To date, 75 units have been completed (phases 1 to 3; another 37 are at various stages in phase 4, and substructures have commenced on another 77 in phase 5. Two-bedroom units are being constructed by Duravilla Homes with the Ministry of Agriculture spearheading the shadehouse aspect.

The development will deliver 500 homes, each paired with a shade house to promote food security and provide beneficiaries with opportunities to generate additional income. The project is designed with a strong focus on empowering women-led households while creating sustainable livelihoods.

The visit forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing monitoring programme to ensure the project remains on track and delivers lasting benefits to future homeowners.
