A 41-year-old man who hacked his colleague to death – almost severing the victim’s head in the process – was today charged with murder.

Dexter Agrian called “Adrian”, an excavator operator from Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Teriq Mohammed where he was charged with the murder of Mark Benn, a gold miner.

Agrian was not required to plead and was remanded to prison until October 30, 2025.

Benn, 38, of Blueberry Hill, Wismar, Linden, was murdered on the evening of Saturday, September 11, 2025, at Big Mara Mara Backdam Middle Mazaruni River.

Police had reported that on the night in question, Agrian, Benn and  two Venezuelan women were partying.

Benn then asked one of the women to have sexual intercourse with him, and she told him ‘no’ because he was drunk. This annoyed Benn, who disconnected the woman’s cellphone, which was playing music at the time. Agrian then intervened and grabbed Benn around his waist, pulling him away from the shop.

Benn rebuked him, stating, “We good, but never again you hug me like that, because thief men does hold people like that.”

Without saying anything further, Agrian, who was armed with a sharp 13-inch-long knife, reportedly pulled it from his waist and dealt the man one chop behind his head, causing him to fall to the ground.

The accused then reportedly went over Benn and dealt him another chop to his neck, almost severing it.

When the accused was arrested and told of the allegation, he reportedly told the police officers that, “I drink couple well Guinness and I can’t remember exactly what happened.”
