$40,000 bail for businessman allegedly caught with marijuana hidden in pills

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Ronald James of Lot 55 Albouys Street Lodge, Georgetown, charged with possession of narcotics was ordered to post $40,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

He initially pleaded guilty to the charge, particulars of which alleged that on March 21, at Georgetown, he had 10 grammes of marijuana in his possession, but a not guilty plea was entered, after he provided an explanation to the Court.

According to James, he was not aware of the illegal substance in his possession. He told the Court that his boss, who operates a drug store, gave him a bag to take to the City [Georgetown] from the interior.

He said he was asked to take a bag containing cologne, deodorant, tablets, etc but was not aware that the prohibited substance was hidden inside the tablets.

Attorney- at – Law, Paul Fung-A-Fat represented the accused and requested bail in a reasonable sum, after stating that James is a businessman.

Police Prosecutor, Michael Grant did not object to bail and the case was transferred before Magistrate Faith McGusty for report and fixtures on April 28.
