Seventy-six-year-old Chinese businessman Quan Sheng Li has been charged and remanded to prison for the murder of six-year-old Zi Feng Cao at Parika, East Bank Essequibo. Li appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was not required to plead to the indictment.

Nevertheless, during the court proceedings, the prosecution related that the post-mortem report and witness statements are still outstanding from the case file and requested time to complete same. As such, Li was remanded to prison until November 5, 2026.

The lad was chopped to the neck during a dispute over money involving his parents and Li last Wednesday. It was reported that Li had visited the family’s restaurant demanding money he claimed to have invested in the business.

Li became angry after the money was not handed thus resulting in an argument. However, at the same time, the child returned from school and hugged the suspect but collapsed shortly after with a wound to his neck.

He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead while Li fled with a chopper in his hands. He was later arrested and admitted to the killing the child. He subsequently led investigators to the location where he had disposed of the weapon.  The lad was cremated on Sunday.
