The sum of $316.5 million has been allocated in Budget 2026 to facilitate the construction of the country’s first school for persons on the autism spectrum as well as to develop Special Education Needs (SEN) centres in every region.
This is according to Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, who explained that the autism school will be constructed at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE).
These efforts are intended to support Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
Dr Singh said the government will also work with the private sector and government agencies to create more opportunities for PWDs to enter the workforce.
Existing programmes for PWDs, he said, will continue this year. This includes the payment of permanent disability benefits.
Last year, Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony had disclosed that the government is training professionals to better identify children on the autism spectrum so they can receive the care they need.
