Residents of Swan, along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, are set to benefit from the reconstruction of a key access road under the Rehabilitation/Construction of Swan Madawini First Entrance, project. The initiative, valued at $84.2 Million will see the development of an 870-metre-long concrete roadway designed to significantly improve access and mobility for residents.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Madanlall Ramraj, during a visit to the community today, met with residents to provide reassurance that the road will be fully redone. He emphasized Government’s people-centred approach, noting that the engagement was important to hear firsthand the concerns of residents and ensure that their needs are addressed through responsive action.
“Our government’s 2026 National Budget, themed ‘Putting People First,’ is not just a slogan. It is a guiding principle that shapes how we respond to the needs of citizens. We as a government are committed to ensuring that all projects not only meets the standard required but serves the people effectively. That is why I am here today, to listen, to engage, and to ensure your concerns are addressed,” the Minister stated.
The road had previously undergone construction but failed, with several defects emerging after completion. Residents raised concerns with the Ministry regarding the poor condition of the surface, citing challenges with daily access and usability, which prompted a detailed assessment of the issues.
Under the scope of works, the road will be reconstructed using six inches of structural reinforced concrete, incorporating BRC mesh and high-tension steel dowels, and completed with hard shoulders. Addressing concerns raised by residents about access during construction, Minister Ramraj assured that alternative arrangements will be put in place, guided by continued consultation, to minimize disruption and maintain connectivity.
“We do not want any Guyanese utilising roads that are not up to standard. When families, especially children, have to use these roads daily, for school, work, and essential activities, it is our responsibility to ensure they are safe and reliable. That is why we acted quickly, because this kind of intervention brings immediate relief to residents who depend on this road every single day,” he added.
The Ministry of Public Works continues to reaffirm its commitment to delivering quality, durable infrastructure, underscoring that investments must translate into meaningful improvements in the lives of citizens, in keeping with Government’s broader development agenda.
