Six police officers are now under arrest as the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) continues its investigations into the death of Gavin Kennard Douglas, 32, who died on Saturday whilst in the lockups at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station.
In a statement released today, the Guyana Police Force said on Monday, three ranks attached to Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station and one from the La Parafaite Harmonie Police Station were placed under close arrest and questioned. The GPF said two other ranks from the La Parafaite Harmonie Police Station were later placed under close arrest and are also being questioned.
The police noted that as the OPR continues its investigations, other ranks are likely to be arrested.
Douglas, of Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara (WCD), was arrested on Saturday in connection with an alleged robbery under arms committed on October 28, at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop.
The police said Douglas was escorted to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station at approximately 11:36 hours. And at about noon, while being placed into the lock-ups, he reportedly became aggressive and resisted police ranks.
Police said Douglas was subsequently restrained and placed in the lock-ups. At approximately 12:45 hours, Douglas was reportedly observed frothing at the mouth during a check of the lock-ups. He was subsequently rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he died while receiving medical attention.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on Monday determined the cause of death to be brain haemorrhage due to blunt trauma. During the examination, two taser studs were removed from the deceased’s body and lodged as exhibits.
Upon completion of the examination, the body was handed over to relatives for burial.
