Sir Ronald Sanders, KCMG, KCN, AM, has been officially installed as the 11th Chancellor of the University of Guyana following a special ceremony at the Turkeyen Campus this morning.

In delivering remarks, Sir Ronald said he is committed to faithfully executing the responsibilities of his office and building on the legacy of his predecessors.

“I shall endeavour to emulate the vision, integrity and public service that mark their example and I acknowledge with respect all the former chancellors and co-chancellors,” he said.

“I see my responsibilities as helping to sustain the university’s integrity, its relevance and confidence in a time of rapid national change,” he added.

Sir Ronald also took the opportunity to emphasise that if Guyana is to move beyond economic boom-and-bust cycles and reduce its dependence on imported expertise, UG must be positioned at the center of national development — not on the margins — serving as a driver of capability, confidence, and competence.

“The University of Guyana must sit at the very center of (of national development), not at its margins, not as an observer, but as a driver of capability, confidence and competence,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Paloma Mohamed-Martin, welcomed the Chancellor with warm greetings, stating that she is confident the university will continue to flourish under his leadership.

Dr. Wayne Wesley, Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Caribbean Examinations Council, also welcomed the newly appointed Chancellor, highlighting his appointment as a milestone that could foster growth and development across the Caribbean region.

Sir Ronald Sanders, a distinguished Guyanese diplomat, scholar, and current Antigua and Barbuda Ambassador to the US/OAS, was appointed the 11th Chancellor of the University of Guyana (UG) on January 2, 2026.
