Shooting outside extradition witness’ home: “All I am doing is my duty” – senior cop says himself, family targeted

Senior Superintendent of Police Prem Narine has described attacks against him and members of his family as disheartening, maintaining that he is simply carrying out his duties as a police officer.

Narine, Head of the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Special Branch Unit and a witness in the extradition proceedings involving United States (US)-sanctioned and indicted Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, made the remarks during an interview with reporters outside the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Monday.

He said his family had also been drawn into the controversy, with his brother and the latter’s business coming under attack. “My family is being dragged into this. They have been attacking my brother, his business. They attack me personally, as you are all aware,” Narine told reporters. However, he declined to comment further, explaining that the matters were under investigation.

Asked how he felt about being referred to as a “murderer” and an “assassin”, the senior police officer said the descriptions were hurtful, insisting that he was only performing his responsibilities as a law enforcement officer.

“It’s very disheartening because all I am doing is executing my duty as a policeman. I have effected an arrest and that’s all I am doing, giving the evidence as to what I did,” he said.

Narine’s comments come amid an investigation into the alleged unauthorised downloading and disclosure of police surveillance footage connected to a shooting outside his Kitty, Georgetown residence on October 12.

The investigation has resulted in charges against three persons, including Police Constable Ashton Chappelle, whose name surfaced during High Court proceedings last week.

Chappelle, 24, of Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was on Monday charged under the Cybercrime Act with obtaining and giving electronic data relating to the national security of the State. The alleged offence occurred on October 24, 2026.

He appeared before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts, where bail was refused and he was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to November 24.

During a habeas corpus application filed on behalf of Mohamed last week, Attorney General (AG) Anil Nandlall, SC, disclosed that investigators had implicated Chappelle in the alleged extraction and transfer of the surveillance recordings from the Police Command Centre.
According to the disclosure, Chappelle allegedly downloaded the recordings, transferred them to a flash drive and handed the device to Police Constable Ryan Greene.

Greene, 20, of Guyhoc Park, Georgetown, and Mohamed, 39, of Houston, Greater Georgetown, are separately charged with unauthorised access to or disclosure of electronic data under the Cybercrime Act.

The prosecution alleges that Greene obtained the surveillance recordings and supplied them to Mohamed in exchange for $800,000.
Both men were denied bail and remanded to prison when they appeared before Magistrate Gibbs on Friday. Their cases are also scheduled to continue on November 24.

The surveillance footage reportedly relates to the October 12 shooting outside Narine’s residence, for which Mohamed, his driver Eugene Thorne and videographer Mario Mohamed have also been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and attempting to obstruct the course of justice. They have pleaded not guilty and were each granted $750,000 bail.

Azruddin Mohamed and his father are contesting extradition proceedings arising from an 11-count indictment in the US involving allegations of fraud, money laundering and other offences linked to an alleged gold-export scheme.
