Several medical workers at GPHC to be disciplined over treatment of Venezuelan woman

Several medical workers attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation will face consequences after an internal investigation found them responsible for the poor treatment meted out to a pregnant woman, resulting in her having a stillbirth.

Several doctors and nurses will face disciplinary actions, including suspension.

This information was this morning relayed by a team from GPHC to the patient, 32-year-old Mayhem Gonzalez, who had formally filed a complaint with the hospital following her horrific experience on January 18.

The woman, a Venezuelan who migrated to Guyana several years ago, had alleged negligence and mistreatment, including emotional and verbal abuse, by the hospital’s staff. González alleged that at one point, a doctor pressed their elbow into her belly and told her that if she did not push, her baby would die.

González, who operates a business at City Mall, said she waited several hours before begging the doctors for a cesarean section (C-section). Despite being unable to move, the doctors reportedly forced her to walk to another bed on her own for the surgery.

Moreover, she claimed her baby was born at 19:00h on January 18, but the hospital allegedly falsified the birth report, stating the baby was born at 18:00h.

GPHC’s Chief Executive Officer Robbie Rambarran had assured the public that appropriate disciplinary actions would have been taken against those healthcare workers, if they were found to be culpable.

However, the GPHC has not officially released any information on the outcome of this investigation to the public. Efforts to contact the hospital’s CEO for a comment proved futile.
