For families building their lives in the newly developed Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme, Region Four, improved road access is making everyday journeys easier and more convenient.

What was once a community mainly accessible through Red Road, ‘E’ Field, Sophia is rapidly transforming into one of the most strategically connected housing schemes.

Following up on commitments made during a community outreach in July, Minister of Housing, Hon. Collin Croal, recently returned to the scheme to inspect the progress of 1,800 metres of newly constructed, reinforced concrete roadways. The project—now 75 percent complete—creates direct access to the main Aubrey Barker Four-lane Highway.

For families living in the community and those constructing their homes, the new roads mean far more than poured concrete; they represent faster commutes, safer travel, and seamless access to major regional hubs. The Aubrey Barker connection links directly into other highway networks—including the Ogle-Eccles Highway, the Mandela to Eccles Highway and the Heroes Highway. This interconnected network gives Cummings Lodge residents effortless travel to central Georgetown, the East Coast, the East Bank, and even Region Three via the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.

Inspecting the progress, Minister Croal reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to listening to citizens and delivering infrastructure that matches the pace of housing growth.

“As a result of a visit that I had here, the residents asked us to construct the road for them to be able to access through the Aubrey Barker end… I am pleased to see the work is ongoing,” said the Minister.

He added, “within a week, all types of vehicles will be able to drive on the eastern end, and the western end will be completed within two weeks. Every resident will soon enjoy two reliable entry points into the scheme.”

The eastern access road is already partially open to traffic, with the improvement making a meaningful difference for residents.

“This is a great addition for the residents who are now building and starting to live in the community,” first-time homeowner, Chandra Singh shared.

“It’s going to make access so much easier for us living here. As a first-time homeowner, I really appreciate this initiative. I stand as one lucky homeowner, and I look forward to seeing more initiatives like this across the country as new communities are built,” she added.

Tara Balram, another resident of the new housing development, welcomed the thoroughfare, noting that the new road provides a more convenient route to her workplace and improves access to the Aubrey Barker Highway.

“With this newly constructed road, it is very convenient for me to reach to my work … I’m super excited and proud about the work that the Government has been doing for the short period of time that I have been here” Balram said.

The northern section of the Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme comprises more than 450 completed turn-key two-bedroom and three-bedroom flat and elevated homes, along with internal concrete roads, a police outpost and public open spaces. In the southern section, where house lots have been allocated, development is progressing, with first-phase infrastructure, including electrical networks and pipelines, already installed as families begin constructing their homes.

Minister Croal reaffirmed the Ministry of Housing’s commitment to continuing infrastructure development in the area, noting that further improvements will be undertaken as occupancy increases and more families settle into the thriving community.
