Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, on Monday afternoon met with residents of the new housing development at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara (ECD), where he outlined a series of measures aimed at enhancing infrastructure, security, and overall community development within the area.
The engagement was held at the invitation of residents and follows a similar meeting conducted last year to address issues affecting the community.
Accompanying the Minister were Head of the Guyana Livestock Development Authority, Dr. Dwight Walrond; Dr. Randy Persaud of the Office of the President; Commander of Guyana Police Force – Region 4 ‘C’ Division, Mr. Khali Pareshram; and engineers of the Central Housing & Planning Authority, Mr. Davindra Ramnarine, Mr. Orlando Arno and Mr. Raefer Clinton.
During the meeting, Minister Croal announced that the eastern and western main access roads within the scheme, totaling approximately 5.56 kilometres, will be upgraded to asphalt and the project has already been tendered. In addition, approximately 3.5 kilometres of cross streets connecting to the main access roads will be constructed as concrete roads to further improve internal connectivity.
Addressing residents’ concerns regarding security, the Minister said that a site has already been identified for the construction of a police outpost within the community. This facility will enhance law enforcement presence and contribute to improved safety for residents. He also indicated that the CH&PA will work to replace streetlights within the scheme that are currently not functioning.
A commitment was also made regarding the clearing and debushing sections of the scheme where vegetation has become overgrown.
In relation to water supply, households are currently connected to the existing LBI well system. However, as part of Guyana Water Incorporated’s long-term plan to support the expansion of housing developments along the East Coast Demerara corridor, the area is expected to benefit from the construction of a water treatment facility, which will allow for the provision of better water quality to households.
In keeping with the Government’s focus on building sustainable communities, a site has also been identified for the establishment of a playfield. Works will be undertaken to ensure residents have access to a recreational space for sports and community activities.
