The Public Works Ministry on Thursday stated that it has awarded contracts to improve road shoulders across Georgetown, with works already underway in some communities.
Under this programme, roads shoulders-verges will be cleared, excavated and filled with compacted crusher-run stone or other appropriate aggregates to create a firmer, more durable surface. This will provide improved space for parking where appropriate, helping to reduce parking within traffic lanes and support better use of the existing road corridor.
The programme will also address poor roadside runoff. In some communities, road verges have become built up above the adjoining road surface, restricting the flow of rainwater into roadside drains and contributing to ponding during heavy rainfall.
Excavating and reshaping these shoulders to appropriate levels and slopes, while keeping drainage outlets clear, will help water flow more efficiently from the roads into the drains and reduce localized water accumulation. The use of granular material will facilitate filtration of surface water to the replenish ground water.
The surface will remain granular, there will be no casting of concrete.
An important part of this programme is clearing roadside obstructions. Over the years, many verges have become occupied by derelict vehicles, unauthorised shops and structures, stockpiled building materials and other encumbrances. These obstructions restrict access, occupy valuable public space and detract from the appearance of our communities.
Residents, businesses and vehicle owners are therefore being urged to cooperate with the Ministry by removing these items from road reserves and keeping areas earmarked for works accessible. The cooperation of communities is essential to completing the improvements efficiently and maintaining their benefits.
The works form part of a phased approach to improving Georgetown’s Road network and public spaces. The immediate focus is on creating firm, usable shoulders and recovering obstructed roadside areas. In selected locations, these improvements will also support future road widening, subject to further assessment and design.
A subsequent phase will incorporate tree planting at suitable locations to provide shade and enhance the appearance of our streets, while allowing space for drainage, utilities, visibility and access.
Throughout implementation, attention will be given to maintaining access to properties, protecting drainage routes and allowing safe movement for pedestrians. Improved shoulders should be used responsibly, without blocking drains, entrances or pedestrian routes.
The ministry added that it acknowledges that excavation and construction may cause temporary inconvenience and ask residents and road users for their patience and cooperation.
Similar road shoulder improvement works will also be undertaken in communities across Regions 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, extending the benefits beyond Georgetown to other coastal communities. Works have already commenced in some communities as part of this wider rollout.
The Ministry’s objective is to create a more orderly, accessible and attractive City and Villages, with improved roadside conditions, better use of public space and a foundation for further upgrades. We encourage every resident and business to play their part by keeping road reserves clear and supporting the ongoing improvements.
