President Dr Irfaan Ali has congratulated Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell following his party’s victory in Thursday’s general election, which secured the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) a second consecutive term in office.
In a message posted on his social media page, President Ali described Mitchell’s re-election as a vote of confidence in his leadership and a mandate for continuity in the policies and vision being pursued by his Administration.
“I extend congratulations to Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell on his renewed mandate to lead Grenada.
“His re-election represents a vote of confidence in his leadership and a mandate of continuity for the policies and vision his government has been pursuing for Grenada,” the Guyanese Head of State stated.
Ali also expressed his interest in strengthening relations between the two Caribbean Community (Caricom) member states, particularly through closer cooperation and regional integration.
“I look forward, during his new term, to expanding our close collaboration and working together to advance regional integration,” he said.
According to results reported by regional media, the NDC secured 14 of Grenada’s 15 parliamentary seats, with the Opposition New National Party (NNP) winning the remaining seat in St George North West, represented by Adrian Joseph.
More than 97,000 people were registered to vote in the election.
The result increases the NDC’s parliamentary representation from nine seats, which it secured in the 2022 general election, to 14, giving the party a larger majority in the House of Representatives.
Mitchell first became Prime Minister in June 2022 after leading the NDC to victory over the NNP Administration of former Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, ending the latter party’s nine-year tenure in Government.
