Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, on Tuesday met with representatives of the Guyana Poultry Producers Association (GPPA) at his office to discuss current developments within the poultry sector.
During the engagement, GPPA representatives highlighted market trends showing a decline in production levels coupled with an increase in demand for chicken. As a result, the Association is seeking the Government’s assistance in facilitating the temporary importation of chicken to help meet market demand.
The representatives noted that the measure would assist in maintaining stable market prices during the period of reduced supply and that once local production returns to normal levels, there would be no need for continued importation.
Minister Mustapha said the request will be carefully considered, with any decision being made in the best interest of consumers, poultry producers and the overall sustainability of the poultry industry.
