Police are probing the alleged drowning of 16-year-old Vernil Fredricks of Fitzburg, Port Kaituma, who reportedly drowned yesterday (Sunday, November 9, 2025) at Canal Bank, Port Kaituma, North West District.
Preliminary inquiries disclosed that on the said date, about 14:20 hours, Vernil Fredricks was swimming in the middle of the said river when the 16-year-old was suddenly heard screaming for help. He was then seen going under the water and did not resurface.
A report was made at the Port Kaituma Police Station. Ranks from the station responded and with the assistance of public-spirited citizens, managed to retrieve body of the 16-year-olf from the river.
CPR was administered but proved futile. Fredericks was subsequently transported to the Port Kaituma Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor.
The body of the deceased is at the Port Kaituma Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
