Porous borders, strengthening border controls among key areas discussed during stakeholders’ meeting in Reg. 7

Senior officials of Regional Division Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) on Thursday convened a high-level stakeholders’ meeting to address pressing security, border, and community matters affecting the region.

The meeting was chaired by Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Dion Moore, who was joined by Deputy Commander Woman Superintendent. D. Handy, Superintendent R. Nedd, Assistant Superintendent T. Griffith, Inspector K. Gordon, and Immigration rank Woman Sergeant Dennan.

Stakeholders at the meeting

Stakeholders in attendance raised several key concerns, including general security issues across Region Seven; porous borders and the need for strengthened border controls; vulnerability of Amerindian communities; increasing reports of illicit drug sales; continuous monitoring of the rise in Venezuelan nationals within communities; the repainting and identification of road signs; the need for heightened KPS and VPS presence during the festive season and concerns related to cross-border terrorism.

During the session, GRA Branch Manager Dr. Satish Basdeo reported a 41% increase in the purchasing of road licences and a 36% increase in the renewal of driver’s licences, indicating improved compliance.

All issues raised were discussed in detail, with assurances that corrective measures will continue to be implemented.

The meeting concluded with a unified commitment from all stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and enhance security initiatives across Region Seven.
